ING Counters Islamophobia and Bullying in Schools by Expanding its Programs Nationally

Over the last six months the Content Department at ING has developed a number of exciting new lesson plans that were designed to reach end users directly instead of relying solely on a Muslim speaker. The new curriculum include five lesson plans for Getting to Know American Muslims and Their Faith (GTKAM), eight lesson plans for A History of Muslims in America, and five lesson plans for Muslim Contributions to Civilization.

ING Selected as a Top Ten Best Practice Program by the U.S.

The U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy (USCCD), in partnership with the U.S. State Department and in support of more than 1000 U.S. Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs) conducting citizen diplomacy activities convened a historic U.S. Summit for Global Citizen Diplomacy on November 16-19, 2010 in Washington, DC. The goal of the Summit and the ten-year Initiative for Global Citizen Diplomacy is to double the number of American volunteers of all ages involved in international activities at home or abroad, from an estimated 60 million today to 120 million by 2020. ING President Maha Elgenaidi co-chaired the Summit's Faith-Based Organizations Task Force which looked at how faith-based organizations play a role in addressing numerous global issues through their mission trips, outreach services, and other operations or programs. One of the organizations featured as a top ten Best Practice Program was ING, for both its Islamic and Interfaith Speakers Bureau programs. ING's Islamic Speakers Bureau program consists of Muslim speakers who supplement education relating to Islam and Muslims and conduct cultural diversity training in public institutions. ING's Interfaith Speakers Bureau consists of Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu speakers who supplement education related to world religions and cultural diversity. One or both programs are active in several states in the U.S. and plans are underway for expansion in Europe and Canada.

ING Reports on Its Impact in the Community – Special Newsletter Edition

This is a very special edition of the ING newsletter. We are reporting on our work's impact in the community, which is based on numerous evaluations which we conducted during the academic year between September 2009 and June 2010.

Spring 2010

Teachers and University Faculty Find ING Content Relevant and Its Speakers Effective

Beginning in November of 2009, ING has been surveying teachers and university faculty who request Islamic Speakers Bureau (ISB) presentations to gauge their level of satisfaction with the presentations. Between November 2009 and January 2010, 72 out of approximately 150 requestors (48%) have volunteered to take the online survey which is administered a few days after the presentation. The survey evaluates overall satisfaction with the presentation as well as specific questions about timeliness in scheduling the presentation, relevancy and effectiveness of ING content, and the efficacy of ING speakers, who are trained and certified by ING to speak on specific ING presentation titles. Initial results of the surveys are as follows below.

ING Expands Its Reach and Impact in 2008-2009

ING speakers presented at nearly 300 schools, colleges and other organizations, reaching more than 22,000 students and adults in the past academic year. Total presentations in the months of September 2008 through August 2009 represent an 8% increase over the same period from the year before.

The growth in outreach was primarily due to the new Interfaith Speakers Bureau, which recently completed its first full year. This program enabled ING to visit several high schools and colleges for the first-time to teach about Muslims and their religion in the context of America's religious pluralism. Interfaith panels accounted for one-fourth of ING outreach and reached approximately 5,000 individuals.

ING In Step with President Barack Obama's Vision of Inclusiveness

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth. And because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

ING Celebrates 16 Years of Education and Interfaith Community Engagement at Annual Supporters' Dinner

ING celebrated its 16-year anniversary at its Annual Supporters' Dinner and Eid Celebration on Sunday, October 5, 2008. The sold-out event, which was attended by over 700 people featured as its keynote speaker Dr. John Esposito, author and professor, who began the evening before the program commenced with a book-signing of his most recent work "Who Speaks for Islam."

ING Annual Supporters Dinner and Eid Holiday Celebration

The ING Annual Supporters Dinner this year is on Sunday, October 5th, 2008, between 6:30 and 9:30 PM at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara. The event commemorates ING's 16-year anniversary and celebrates the end of Ramadan holiday, Eid-ul- Fitr (Festival of Breaking the Fast).This year 's theme, "Telling Our Stories: Transforming the World," emphasizes the importance for American Muslims of telling their own stories about their lives and identities rather than allowing others to tell their story for them. In recognition of those who have enabled ING speakers to tell their stories and help build bridges among people of all faiths and none, ING will be presenting "Building Bridges" and "Excellence in Cultural Diversity Education" awards to honor individuals who have significantly helped communities improve their understanding and respect for cultural diversity in the fields of law enforcement, healthcare, education, and community relations.
